Worship of the Kings, Central Panel of the Main altar, Meßkirch
Master of Meßkirch (also known as Meszkirch or Messkirch) is the name of a German painter from the Northern Renaissance period, which was active in the first half of the 16th century.
The artist's name refers to the altar pieces he has produced for the Meßkirch monastery church in the Sigmaringen district.
The altar pieces were created by Count Gottfried Werner von Zimmern, for whom the painter worked in the period from 1530 to 1538. It is about the work of a high altar and ten side altars.
Due to his style, the master would be trained in the area of Albrecht Dürer, possibly with Hans von Kulmbach or Hans Leonhard Schäufelein.
Although the identity of the master has not yet been established with certainty, the thoughts of art historians go out to Peter Strüb de Jongere and Joseph Weiß.
The central panel of the main altar is still in the Meßkirch monastery church, the other pieces are spread across numerous museums in and outside Germany.
