Penninc (13th century), presumably an "artist name" of someone who was constantly losing money, was a Dutch author, born and raised in the county of Flanders, known only from one novel in verses: the Arthurroman "Walewein" alias "Walewein Jeeves and Floating Chess Board". Penninc left this novel unconscious. Traditionally, Penninc has died, but not without having passed his "plan" to Pieter Vostaert, who provided the novel by adding about 3300 versus rules. Whether Penninc and Pieter Vostaert really know each other is uncertain, but by no means impossible.
It is unthinkable that Penninc has written the Roman of Walewein without writing (translated or translated) other texts, but if that is the case, no letter has been saved. Also, his name is nowhere called in the Sublime Middle Dutch Literature.
Analysis of the Roman of Walewein shows that Penninc had a thorough knowledge of both English and continental Arthurromans and, in addition, the Old French chanson the gestures.
Although we do not know anything about Penninc except he was a Flemish, he is one of the very few Middle Dutch epic authors whose name is known. Also see Externe link
