Aricia (present Ariccia), in the Albanian Hills has become famous by the cult of Diana Nemorensis and made famous by James Frazer in his book The Golden Bough. A Study in Magic and Religion. In a holy forest near Aricia, a priest of Diana lived, named Rex Nemorensis, the king of the forest. Only a relieved slave could cover this function and the only possibility to take over was to pick a tree from the sacred tree (Frazer thought it was a mistake) and then kill the current Rex Nemorensis. Frazer's theory has now become obsolete and it is believed that it is prehistoric.
Caligula later took a walk with this habit by hiring a powerful slave when the old priest was wearing his office for years (Suetonius, Calig. 35.).
