The hexagonal map (or exaggerated map) is the type of map most commonly used in table wargames. The map is divided into small hexes of equal size (see Diagram 1.)

For these reasons, quadratic maps are rarely used in wargames.

The use of hexagonal maps was introduced by Avalon Hill in the 1970s.
