Tupac Amaru
Túpac Amaru (Thupaq Amaru in Quechua) (± 1537 - 1572) was the last native leader of the Incastate in Peru. He became the successor of his brother Titu Cusi. He ruled from 1571 to his death in 1572.
After the Spanish conquests of the Incastate in the thirties of the 16th century, a few members of the royal family established an independent Incastate in Vilcabamba. The ruler at that time was the father of Túpac Amaru, Manco Inca Yupanqui. After a Spanish attack in 1544, Manco Inca Yupanqui died and was succeeded by his son Sayri Túpac. Sayri Túpac died in 1561 and was succeeded by Titu Cusi who died again in 1571. Túpac Amaru followed his two brothers and his father in Vilcabamba.
In 1572 Túpac Amaru was captured by the Spaniards and in Cuzco beheaded.
In 1780 there was the great insurgency of his name mate Túpac Amaru II.
