Native of Athens, son of the sophist philosopher and pay Leonzio, Valerio had a brother, Gessio, and an Atenaide sister. In 421 Atenaide (changed his name to Elia Eudocia) married the Emperor of the Orient Theodosius II; the empress gave many favors to the brothers.
