The system is comprised of 224,256 X86 AMD Opteron processors and runs a modified version of the Linux operating system called Cray Linux Environment. Jaguar is based on Cray XT5 architecture, an improved Cray XT4 architecture.

The Jaguar system has undergone three updates since its installation in 2005. Initially, the system was based on the Cray Xt3 architecture and developed 25 teraflops. At the beginning of 2008, the Cray XT4 263 teraflop architecture upgrade was operational. During 2008 the system was expanded to the 1.4 petaflops XT5 architecture. In 2009, the system consisted of more than 200,000 processors connected to the Cray Seastar2 + network. XT4 and XT5 components were combined in a single system using an InfiniBand network.
