Elsa Fornero


Elsa Fornero (San Carlo Canavese, May 7, 1948) is an Italian economist, professor and politician. She is the current Italian Minister of Work, Welfare and Equal Opportunities.

Fornero is professor of economics at the University of Turin. She mainly deals with studies on wealth, social security and pension funds. She is a member of several scientific institutes and advisory councils. She wrote, together with Mario Monti, among other things 'Manuale italiano di microeconomia'. She also wrote articles for the business newspaper Il Sole 24 Ore.

Elsa Fornero had a mandate from 1993 to 1998 as a city councilor in Turin. On November 16, 2011, she was asked by Mario Monti as Minister of Work, Welfare and Equal Opportunities in the Monti Cabinet. In December 2011, she burst into tears at a press conference when she had to propose the cuts in the pension system. Fornero is independent.
