French Union

The area of the Union Française

The Union française (French Union) was founded on 27 October 1946 with the Fourth French Republic. The Union française had to replace the old colonial system of France (Empire français). The union française was followed by the Community française (French community) on 28 February 1958, when the Fifth French Republic was founded.

The British Commonwealth served as an example of the Union française, and the president of France was also president of the Union française. France would then determine the common foreign policy, defense, justice and currency policy.

The Union française consisted of France, overseas French departments, mandate areas, colonies and protectorates. The countries of French Indochina left the Union française in 1954, while Morocco and Tunisia became independent in 1956.
