Megara (mythology)

Megara (Greek: Μεγάρα) was a princess of Thebe, in Greek mythology. She was married to Heracles, as a city's thanks for the suppression of a hostile tribe that kept the city under her thumb for a long time.

Megara was the mother of Heracles' three children. These children were killed by Heracles in a rage of madness - Herakles underwent twelve works.

After the work, Herakles returned to Megara, but she could not face him. His face reminded her of her lost children too much. Herakles let her go and marry her to his cousin Iolaus.
