An Iranian tār

The tār (Persian: تار) is a long-haul a key instrument with five to eight strings. The instrument is spread from Persia (Iran), Azerbaijan, Turkey, Armenia to Georgia.

The instrument has a single-piece wooden chime with a sheet of parchment on which, like a banjo, the comb rests. The three string corners are usually voted C-G-C, C-F-C or D-G-C. The two highest (melody) choirs are a quarter or a quarter.

The tār is used primarily in local traditional music.
