Neptunalia


The Neptunalia were a celebration day in ancient Rome in honor of God Neptune.

The party was celebrated during the summer's drought, when Neptune was considered to be a god of water for rain. According to Varro, the Neptunalia was celebrated on July 23rd. The holiday was classified on Roman calendars as Nept (unales) ludi or Nept (unales) ludi et feriae (which stands for Neptune Games (and holidays) and was celebrated with dance and drink. There is nothing known about the specific traditions of the Neptunalia, except that the Romans built huts of branches (umbrae) in which they drank and celebrated. Also see grades
