Orion (company)

Orion was the name of a company located on the West side in Zaandam and that produced and traded mineral oil products.

The company was founded in 1899 by Jan van Heyningen. In 1910 a four-storey factory building was built which was expanded in 1924. Man-made teat fat (for the smooth milking of cows), brake fluid and polish oil was produced. Also, oils and fats were imported from the United States.

In 1942, the company was transferred to D.H. Reinders and after World War II, the sale of gasoline under the brand name Orion began. The company went to Orion Petroleum Products Company N.V. Due to lack of follow-up, the company was sold to the Burmah Trading Netherlands in Voorburg in 1968. This integrated the brand name Orion into its own brand name Castrol. The Zaanse oil plant was closed. External source
