Peter Nijhoff

Peter Nijhoff (1981)

Peter Nijhoff (1934 - 2007) was a Dutch nature protector. He was, among other things, director of the Foundation for Nature and Environment.

Nijhoff was a member of the NJN and studied biology before becoming a secretary of the Contact Committee for Nature and Landscape Protection, the organization that organized nature and landscape conservationists since 1932. In 1972 he was one of the founders of the Nature and Environment Foundation in which the Contact Committee was to be established. He became director of the new foundation and stayed this until his retirement in 1999. He held numerous functions within the nature conservation movement and was, for example, one of the founders of the Dutch branch of the IUCN. In 1998, he received the prize for conservation of the Prince Bernhard Fund.

At his farewell in 1999, Nature Monuments announced that as a tribute to Nijhoff the new hiking route in South West Drenthe would be called Peter Nijhoffpad. Nijhoff became the organizer of an organization organizing hiking arrangements around this route. Sources
