Zeke Zarchy


Rubin "Zeke" Zarchy (New York, June 12, 1915 - Irvine (California), April 12, 2009) was an American solo trumpeter from the time of the Big Band.

In 1934 he became a member of Joe Haymes's orchestra. Then he played with Benny Goodman in 1936 and with Artie Shaw in 1937. From 1937 to 1942 he played with the bands of Red Norvo, Bob Crosby, Mildred Bailey, Frank Sinatra, Helen Ward, Judy Garland, Tommy Dorsey and Ella Fitzgerald. His trumpet play is to listen to classic recordings like Benny Goodman's Bugle Call Rag, Glenn Millers Moonlight Cocktails and Bob Crosby's South Rampart Street Parade.

At the outbreak of World War II, Zarchy was the first musician chosen by Glenn Miller for what would become the well-known "Army Air Force Band". After the war, singer Frank Sinatra Zarchy began to move to Los Angeles and become a studio musician. He played on the records of hundreds of singers like Louis Armstrong, Tony Bennett, Dinah Shore and The Mills Brothers. His trumpet play is also available in many classic Hollywood movies, such as West Side Story, Dr. Zhivago and The Glenn Miller Story from 1953. In the 60's and 70's he also played a lot for television for the The Smothers Brothers Comedy Hour, The Danny Kaye Show and The Jonathan Winters Show. Later Zarchy made several tours in Europe, Latin America and Australia and performed 32 times in Japan.
