Jan Kalff (urban planner)

Jan Kalff (The Hague, 19 September 1831 - Oosterbeek, 17 September 1913) was director of the Public Works of Amsterdam from 1873 to 1881. The urban development plan for the 19th-century belt formed by Dapperbuurt, de Pijp, Zeeheldenbuurt and Amsterdam Oud West were born.

His expansion plan (Plan Kalff) replaced Van Niftrik's plan, which was characterized by a spacious layout with lots of greenery. Kalff applied no precious star-shaped street patterns, which were necessary for the renovation of the existing buildings, but long straight lines that followed the existing structures of the original polder.
