Kamiakin

Portrait from 1855

Kamiakin, chief of the Yakama, was born around 1800 near the current Starbuck in the Washington state of Washington. His name means 'He does not want to go', derived from 'ka' (not) - 'miah' (go) - 'kamman' (want).

The father of Kamiakin was a Palouse and his mother was a Yakama. Kamiakin had two brothers, 'Skloom' and 'Show-a-way'. When their father took another wife, Kamiakin's mother returned with him and Skloom back to the Yakamas.

During the Yakima war (1855-1855), Kamiakin led the 14 groups in the Yakima Reserve in their fight against the US Army. After being defeated by the Americans in 1858, he fled to Canada to escape his arrest and execution. He stayed at the Flathead for two years, returning home in 1860. In 1864 he moved to the land of the Palouse, where his father came from. He died there in 1877. Sources
