Shell (artwork)

The southern shell with the old city walls depicted. The northern shield with the city weapon depicted.

The Shell (Frisian: The Shell) is a work of art on De Zijl in Dokkum from 1998 made by Gerrit Terpstra. Meaning

The Zijl was the gate between sea and land. There Gerrit Terpstra has placed one of his two images (the other, Masten is in the Dokkumergrootdiep).

It consists of two standing shell-like shapes. Because De Zijl goes over the water, the sound in the Shell, as in real shells, thinks at the sea.

The shapes also remind you of the previously available sliding doors. Image

The southern shell is made of stainless steel and has a section in the shape of the old city walls. The northern shell is made of cast iron and depicts the stars and the moon of the Dokkumse city weapon in the cut.

The sun's light shines through the cut-out shape of the stainless steel shell and forms a kind of sundial on the inside of the cast iron mold.
