Students live in homes specifically assigned to them. Many of these have the shape of corridor rooms, where students have their own room with private facilities and a shared kitchen.

Ryd's architecture is typical of the Miljonprogrammet popular building project from 1965-1974, with the exception of Ryds Herrgård (also known as Herrgår'n or just as HG), made like a mansion, serving as a pubs and student clubs.

Residents of Ryd often refer to Ryd student (in Swedish Studentryd) in opposition to the so-called Ryden of people (Människoryd), predominantly inhabited by non-students. In Linköping, the Ryd has a reputation for being a fairly defective neighborhood, mainly because the "Ryd of People" consist solely of relatively affordable rental properties, which are attractive for low income people. In 2007, 27% of Ryd's residents were born out of Sweden. Notemodify wikitesto Other designers wikitesto
