The Courant Institute of Mathematical Sciences (CIMS) is an independent part of New York University (NYU). The institute falls under the Faculty of Arts & amp; Science and serves as a center for research and continuing education in computer science and mathematics. The director of the Courant Institute reports directly to the provoost and president of New York University and works closely with heads of other NYU college and division.

The Courant Institute is named after Richard Courant, one of the founders of the Courant Institute, who was professor of mathematics at New York University from 1936 to 1972. Footnotes
