Both parents were born in Italy: his father, Ludovico Candeloro, in 1898 at Pianibbie-Ripitella, a hamlet of Casoli in the province of Chieti; the mother, Iolanda Giannetti, to Amaseno in the province of Frosinone.

He is a professor of History at Governors State University (Illinois), executive director of the American Italian Historical Association, a member of the Chicago Historical Society and the Illinois State Historical Society, also a point for the Department of Cultural Anthropology at the University of Rome, the Agnelli Foundation in Turin and the NIAF (National Italian American Foundation).
