Gambalone

Gambalone, also known as Gambalone, is a channel (or cable) that flows into Lower Parma, a tributary left of the Enza River, where it flows little to Sorbolo Valley. It originates near the locality of San Prospero Parmense, part of the municipality of Parma on Emilia street, from where it continues its course, with a total length of about 10.3 km, northeast. The canal now mainly serves for irrigation and drainage of the coast farms, but in the past its waters have been used up to the first half of the 20th century for the operation of some of the historic mills of Sorbola (mill Mazzoli, in the 17th century and Soncini mill); For this reason, Gambalone was also known as a "Grinder Channel". The Gambalone enters Sorbolo via Venezia where, shortly after the beginning of the village, it is intubated and covered. The intubation of the canal in its urban tract took place in several successive phases during the 20th century. After passing Parma-Suzzara railway, it continues its underground course in via Gramsci to Piazza LibertĂ , where it receives the waters of the dead Gambalone. In the last stroke it runs below Via Giovanni XXIII and finally, always intubated and covered, flows into the Enza near the cemetery.
