Giovanni was born in Florence. After his father's death (1476), he and his older brother Lorenzo (Il Popolano) were custody of their cousins Giuliano de 'Medici and Lorenzo de' Medici (Il Magnifico), and were trained by humanists like Marsilio Ficino and Angelo Poliziano. Their interest in classical studies and books was raised, which later led to a large library of manuscripts and codices.
Laterzo, their relationship with Lorenzo Il Magnifico later worsened. This had devoted the legacy of the Popolanoans, rather than simply managing it. After the death of Il Magnifico, the brothers were opponents of his successor and son, Piero, who joined them in Florence in April 1494.
In November, Lorenzo and Giovanni crossed Charles VIII during the invasion of France in Italy, back in Florence. Piero was displaced by the city's revolution. Their support to Girolamo Savonarola gave them the nickname Popolano's (popular).
In 1497, Giovanni Catherina married Sforza, Lady of Forlì and Imola. They had a son, baptized Ludovico. However, this son was renamed Giovanni shortly afterwards by Catherina as Giovanni. Under the name Giovanni delle Bande Nere he became the famous condottiero.
