Herman Thomas Karsten


The market hall is a design by Ir. Herman Thomas Karsten (1884-1945).

Herman Thomas Karsten (Amsterdam, April 22, 1884 - Cimahi, 1945) was a well-known architect and influential urbanist in Dutch-India. He has designed many buildings in West and Central Java, many of which still exist.

In 1914 he left for Dutch India where he will work for the Henri Maclaine Pont desk in Semarang. He became a town planning consultant for the cities Semarang (1916-20, 1936), Buitenzorg (now Bogor) (1920-23), Madiun (1929), Malang (1930-35), Batavia (Jakarta) (1936-37) Magelang (1937-38), Bandung (1941), as well as on a project basis for Cirebon, Meester Cornelis (now part of Jakarta known as Jatinegara), Yogyakarta, Surakarta, Purwokerto, Padang, Medan and Banjarmasin.

In 1931 he settled in Bandoeng and from 1941 he also taught in city planning at the Bandoeng Technical High School (now Institut Teknologi Bandung) until his captivity by the Japanese.
