Seleines belong to a family of adhesion proteins involved in the inflammation process (or flogosis). They are transmembrane glycoproteins, consisting of a single polypeptide chain (monomeric). The binding of selectine to the respective ligands mediates the adhesion process of the leukocytes to the endothelial walls and their rolling in order to allow leukocyte extravasation, ie the passage of leukocytes from the intravascular space to the diseased tissue, where they play their role aimed at eliminating the injured agent.
The selectine family includes several classes, each of which has a different expression site.
