Claude d'Urfé was born in the parish of La Bastie d'Urfé as the oldest son of Baljuw and Mr. Pierre II d'Urfé and his wife Antoinette de Beauveau. At the age of 20, Claude d'Urfé served in the French army and served as a knight during the Italian War (1521-1526). There he soon became friends with the young French king Frans I.
After his father's death in 1535, Claude d'Urfé became Lord of La Bastie and he also embarked on the office of Forez balding. Ten years later, he was sent by diplomat to the court of Emperor Charles V. He also represented his King at the Council of Trente. Then he was sent to the Holy See to serve as an ambassador to his king. In 1551 he returned to France to act as a teacher at the court for the children of the king. During his presence in the court, his political influence was also increasing. Together with Marshal Anne van Montmorency he was one of the closest confidants of the king. Claude d'Urfé died in 1558 before he could be appointed France's Marshal. Sources
