Map of the Delmarva Peninsula
The Delmarva Peninsula is a large peninsula on the east coast of the United States. The territory of the peninsula is divided by three states, Delaware, Maryland and Virginia. The peninsula separates the Chesapeake Bay from the Atlantic Ocean. The peninsula has an area of 14,130 km². In the year 2000 there were 681,030 people on the peninsula, with population density reaching 48 inhabitants per km², which is relatively low in comparison with the urbanized areas around it.
The Chesapeake Bay Bridge connects the peninsula with the rest of Maryland, while in the south the Chesapeake Bay Bridge Tunnel forms the connection with Virginia mainland.
Dover, the capital of Delaware, is the largest city of the peninsula to population, but the area around Salisbury (Maryland) in the center of the peninsula is economically the most important area. Origin of the name
Delmarva is a portmail of the states that share the peninsula: Delaware, Maryland, and Virginia.
The name was first used in business. For example, The Delmarva was Heat, Light, and Refrigerating Corp. already in 1913. The name was only widely used in the twenties of the last century. 38 ° 30 'NB, 75 ° 40' WL
