John Tengo Jabavu (Heraldtown (Transkei), January 11, 1859 - Alice, September 10, 1921) was a South African political activist and editor of the first newspaper in a black language, the Xhosa. biography

In 1876, Jabavu took over the editors of the newspaper Isigidimi Sama Xosa (The Xhosa Messenger). In the early 1980s he had become an important political figure.

In particular, Jabavu wrote about the threat that formed the growing South African nationalism and demand for equal rights for the black population in South Africa. He also became known as the advocate of women's rights and public education. In 1884 Tengo Jabavu founded his own newspaper, Imvo Zabantsundu (Black Opninie).

Together with his wife Elda Sakuba, he received four sons, including their eldest son Davidson Don Tengo Jabavu, who became a valued writer, professor and activist. Their second son, Alexander, took over the reign of Imvo Zabantsundu after his father's death in 1921.
