Ostilio Ricci

Ostilio Ricci

Ostilio Ricci (Fermo, 1540 - Florence, 1603) was an Italian mathematician and architect.

He was a professor at the Accademia dell'Arte del Disegno, the art academy founded by the painter Giorgio Vasari in Florence in 1561. Around 1580, Grand Duchess of Tuscany Francesco I appointed the 'Medici him as a mathematician at his court.'

As a friend of the family, he taught Galileo Galilei from 1582 to 1583 in geometry. He recognized his genius and convinced Galilei's father, Vincenzo, that Galileo was able to make his study medicine for physiology and physics.
