Rost van Tonningen is a Dutch patrician's family.
The tribe of the genus is Jacob Rost van Tonningen (The Hague, 1753 - Nijmegen, 1826). He was born in The Hague as an illegitimate son of the jeweler daughter Maria Barbara van Tonningen (Delft, 1717- 1791) and according to her statement by the housekeeper Jacob Rost, who died before Jacob's birth. Her statement was confirmed by a good friend Benjamin van Brakel. Jacob Rost van Tonningen established himself as a notary in Zierikzee. From his marriage to Anna van der Hucht ten children were born. Two sons Jan Christian (military) and Marinus Bernardus (jurist) are the descendants of two family branches.
