Theodore Berthels was a doctor and also taught at Nijvel City School.
In October 1830, when he was already 65, he was elected as deputy member in the National Congress. He only took a seat on May 21, 1831. He did not speak once in public sessions during the last weeks of Congress. He voted for Leopold of Saxony Coburg and accepted the Treaty of XVIII articles.
