Antiochus XII Dionysus

Lots Antiochus XII Dionysus was a son of Antiochus VIII Grypus and the younger brother of Seleucus VI Epiphanes, Antiochus XI Epiphanes, Philippus I Philadelphus and Demetrius III Eucaerus. He ruled part of the Seleucid Kingdom from 87-84 BC.

The five brothers inherited a dynastic battle for the throne who carried their father with his half-brother Antiochus IX Cyzicenus and his son Antiochus X Eusebes. After the death of Elder Seleucus, the four younger brothers also began to fight for the throne so that there were now five candidates. Antiochus XII realized after the captivity of Demetrius by establishing the Parthen in Damascus while Philippus had power in Antioch. Antiochus sought to strengthen his position by a battle against the Nabateeans, but the Hashmane chief Jannaeus sought to stop him. Antiochus succeeded in breaking, but then unexpectedly fell in battle with the Nabateeans in a battle he was about to win. His troops were dismissed and the Nabeathians even knew Damascus to occupy. The chaos in what remained of the once-powerful Seleucid kingdom was great.
