Ex (editor)

Ex, an abbreviation of "extended", is a rule editor (English: line editor) for Unix systems.

The original version of ex was an advanced version of the standard Unixeditor ed, which was in the original Berkeley Software Distribution. Ex looks very similar, but it has some options that make it more user-friendly.

Since then, a visual interface has also been gained and it goes live through life. Typically, ex and vi form one program that shows different behaviors depending on the name with which it is called. Typically, ex -v and vi deliver the same result, as well as ex and vi -e. Switching while typing is also possible with: visual to go to 'vi', and in vi the command Q goes to ex mode.

Under HP-UX environments, an alias is available that invokes the editor.

For an example of how to work with an ex-article, refer to the article about ed, as this is similar.
