Joep Verburg


Johannes Jacobus Ignatius (Joep) Verburg (The Hague, July 5, 1945) is a Dutch lawyer, judge and former professor at Utrecht University. Life and work

Prof. Dr. Verburg was born in The Hague in 1945. After completing the high school diploma, he studied Dutch law at Leiden University. In 1975 he graduated as a doctor at the dissertation The right of eviction of witnesses in criminal matters. In 1985 he became Director of Administrative and Legal Affairs of Rijkswaterstaat. From 1986 to 1994 Verburg worked as a special professor of water and water law at Utrecht University. Verburg was President of the Hague Court of Appeal 2001-2012. After retiring as president, he worked until 1 August 2015 as coordinating vice president of that court. In this capacity he was chairman of the Innovative Hoven project, which was concluded in 2013 with the same publication (edited by A.M. Hol). Currently, Verburg is still active as arbitrator for the Council of Arbitration for Construction and as Expert for the GRECO Program IV of the Council of Europe. For his dissertation Verburg received the Modderman Prize (1978) and because of his earnings for the water boards, the Silverpenny of the Union of Waterschappen (1994). He was appointed Officer Orange Nassau in 2015.
