Polar cell

The polar cell is a type of atmospheric circulation present in the polar regions of the Earth. It is characterized by high pressure on the ground, as a result of the colder air present in these geographic areas due to lower sunlight. The pressure gradient generates direct ground flow to lower latitudes, and thus to the polar circle. Here the cold air meets the direct component north of the atmospheric airflow of the Ferrel cell: between the two cells converges and ascends air, generating low pressure zones.

The polar cell is part of the general circulation model proposed by George Hadley, which divides the atmosphere into three cells: the polar one, the one of Ferrel and the Hadley cell.
