Stones of Mora

Stones of Mora

In the Middle Ages, the Kings of Sweden were crowned on the Mora Stones (10 km south of Uppsala). The origin of tradition is unknown. If a king had been chosen, he took place on one of the stones and was welcomed by his subjects. Around this stone, others remembered the election of former kings. One of the remaining stones is the stone with the three crowns, the symbol of Sweden, and reminds of the coronation of Albrecht of Mecklenburg. The use of the stones has been documented between 1275 and 1457.

Around 1515, the shine of the stones was destroyed for political reasons. In 1770 a new building was put down to accommodate the stored stone.
