In mathematics, a boundary condition is the assignment of the value of the solution of a differential equation to the boundaries of the equation definition set. A differential equation often adopts endless solutions and the imposition of additional conditions is necessary to identify a particular solution, which will also be unique if the equation satisfies some regularity hypothesis.
There are different types of conditions, but the most common are those that specify the value of the solution (Dirichlet) and the value of its derivative (Neumann). Assigning both values takes the name of Cauchy's outline conditions.
