The Alltheweb code was born in 1994 as a PhD thesis for an FTP search engine submitted by Tor Egge at the Norwegian University of Science and Technology. Ahead of that initial project on July 16, 1997, the Fast Search and Transfer company was founded that develops a company search engine named FAST, of which Alltheweb becomes a transposition on the web in 1999.

In the 2000s, Alltheweb's search technologies were purchased by Overture Services, which was later acquired by Yahoo !. With Yahoo! crawler development Slurp, Alltheweb shared the same database of results with AltaVista and Yahoo! Search.
