Franklin Baron


Franklin Arthur Merrifield Baron (* 1923) was from 1 January 1960 to January 1961 Chief Minister of Dominica.

Franklin Baron was elected to the Roseau City Council in 1945. In the 1950s he was elected to the Executive Council of Dominica.

In 1957, Franklin Baron founded the Dominica United People's Party (DUPP). In 1958 Dominica obtained autonomy within the West Indies Federation. The 1959 elections were won on Dominica by the DUPP of Franklin Baron (also called Frank Baron). Baron formed a cabinet and became Chief Minister. One year later, elections were held again after the fall of the Baron government, elections were held again, won by the Dominica Labor Party (DLP) of Edward LeBlanc.

Afterwards, Franklin Baron was a successful businessman. In the 1980s he was minister of the government of Mary Eugenia Charles.

In 2003, Irving W. Andre published a biography of Franklin Baron under the title Franklin Baron. The Man, the Myth and the Mission.
