Gate (airport)

Waiting room at the gate at General Abelardo L. Rodríguez International Airport in Tijuana, Mexico

A gate is the passage leaving airline passengers to leave the terminal when they board the plane.

A correct translation would be 'gate', but at Dutch airports, 'translation' was previously chosen for the translation. This translation often caused confusion and is known as 'gate' in the Netherlands.

Small airports, leaving only a few flights a day, have one gate enough, but most airports have multiple gates. Travelers will be told which ports they should report.

At the gate is usually a waiting area where travelers gather until they get permission to get in. Sometimes multiple gates have a common waiting area. When boarding, they must show the boarding pass. Sometimes the boarding pass must be shown before the passengers arrive in the waiting area.

The plane is preferably parked near the gate, so that the passengers can reach the plane on foot. Nearly all international airports have airplane tunnels, resulting in a direct covered walkway between the gate and the plane. Even then, the plane must be parked at the gate. If the plane is at some distance, a bus can be used to bring the passengers from the gate to the plane.
