Software Freedom Day

Software Freedom Day (SFD) is an annual celebration and promotion of free software and open source software. It is organized by teams around the world to announce the benefits of free software and to stimulate its use. The non-profit Software Freedom International (SFI) takes care of the overall organization, such as recruiting sponsors, processing donations and distributing distributable materials. History

The first Software Freedom Day was held on August 28, 2004 with approximately 70 teams. The main sponsor in 2005 was Canonical Ltd., the organization behind Ubuntu, a popular Linux distribution.

Since 2007, Software Freedom Day will be held on the third Saturday of September. Overview
