Flemish Association of Autism


The Flemish Association Autism is a Flemish association that carries out the interests of parents, relatives and people themselves with an autism spectrum disorder. The registered office of the association is based in Ghent.

The association's forerunner was founded in 1975 by parents of autistic children after they had received a lot of incomprehension. This Belgian association was divided in 1980 and a Flemish association was established. In 1986, this was called the Flemish Association of Autism. The association pays its operation, including contributions, gifts, fundraising and government grants.

The association organizes information evenings, discussion nights, courses, workshops, lectures and sports and recreational activities. At the registered office in Ghent, Infohuis is autism where people are welcome to seek information and ask questions. A two-monthly magazine is issued for members and there is also a trimestrial calendar that can be obtained in print or electronic version. Furthermore, an autism telephone is manned.

The association carries out public awareness campaigns, radio and television spots, and advertisements and articles in newspapers and magazines.
